Founded in 2002, the SVRI is a [Pagelink infos="Non Governmental Organization|non-governmental organisation"] committed to eliminating [Pagelink infos="Rape|sexual violence"] by simultaneously addressing the lack of research on the different aspects of sexual violence as well as drawing attention of a wide range of people including policy makers and the media, to this public health issue. The [Pagelink infos="Gender Equality in South Women and African Economic Development|Gender Equality in South Women and African Economic Developmentn"] Medical Research Council now hosts SVRI. The SVRI does this by building an experienced and committed network of researchers, policy makers, activists and donors to ensure that the many aspects of sexual violence are addressed from the perspective of different disciplines and cultures. <h2 id="w_objectives">Objectives</h2> The SVRI objectives are to: <ul> <li>Increase awareness of sexual violence as a priority public health problem through evidence based communication and information.</li> <li>Strengthen the support and funding base for research on sexual violence.</li> <li>Build capacity in sexual violence research.</li> <li>Improve knowledge of sexual violence internationally to influence policy and service delivery.</li> </ul> <h2 id="w_activities">Activities</h2> SVRI will provide funding to organisations working in the area of sexual violence. It acts as a forum for other organisations and practitioners in the field to share research, as well as providing research itself. It provides capacity-building workshops for specialists in sexual violence. Key areas in which they work include: Health effects of sexual violence; Sexual violence and [Pagelink infos="HIV/AIDS/AIDS|HIV/AIDS"]; [Pagelink infos="Universal Declaration of Human Rights|Human rights"] related to sexual violence; Sexual violence against children; Sexual Violence in Conflict Settings; Trafficking; Sexual violence against people with disabilities; [Pagelink infos="Female genital cutting|Female Genital Mutilation"]/Traditional Harmful Practices; Men and Masculinities; Medico-Legal Responses; Prevention; Advocacy; and Restorative Justice. <h2 id="w_sources">References</h2> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.svri.org">http://www.svri.org</a></li> </ul>
