Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI)
SVRI are building an experienced and committed network of researchers, policy makers, activists and donors who would ensure that the many dimension of sexual violence are addressed from the perspective different disciplines and with a multi-cultural outlook.
Mission
The SVRI aims to promote research on sexual violence and generate empirical data that ensures sexual violence is recognised as a priority public health problem.
The SVRI does this by building an experienced and committed network of researchers, policy makers, activists and donors to ensure that the many aspects of sexual violence are addressed from the perspective of different disciplines and cultures.
Objectives
The SVRI objectives are to:
- Increase awareness of sexual violence as a priority public health problem through evidence based communication and information.
- Strengthen the support and funding base for research on sexual violence.
- Build capacity in sexual violence research.
- Improve knowledge of sexual violence internationally to influence policy and service delivery.
Activities
SVRI will provide funding to organisations working in the area of sexual violence. It acts as a forum for other organisations and practitioners in the field to share research, as well as providing research itself. It provides capacity-building workshops for specialists in sexual violence.
Key areas in which they work include: Health effects of sexual violence; Sexual violence and HIV/AIDS/AIDS; Universal Declaration of Human Rights related to sexual violence; Sexual violence against children; Sexual Violence in Conflict Settings; Trafficking; Sexual violence against people with disabilities; Female genital cutting/Traditional Harmful Practices; Men and Masculinities; Medico-Legal Responses; Prevention; Advocacy; and Restorative Justice.
