Smith College

Smith College is an independent women’s liberal arts university located in the town of Northampton, Massachusetts. Since it’s establishment in 1871, the college has supported students through its rigorous and enriching academic environment. Smith is a member of the historical Seven Sisters, in addition to the Five College Consortium – a partnership between Mount Holyoke CollegeMount Holyoke College website, University of Massachusetts Amherst University of Massachusetts Amherst website, Hampshire CollegeHampshire College website, and Amherst CollegeAmherst College website, which gives students access to courses and extracurricular activities on all five campuses.
As one of the largest women’s colleges in the United States, Smith is highly committed to the education and support of women at the undergraduate level – although the university accepts all genders into the graduate program. As undergraduates, Smith students are free to choose from more than 1,000 course offerings in more than 50 areas of study in the social sciences and history, the arts, languages, literature, mathematics and the natural sciences. Additionally, Smith’s open curriculum encourages each student to explore many fields of knowledge – whether studio art, biology, literature, economics, or gender studies. Faculty are fully engaged with their students’ intellectual development, available for discussion and support, while maintaining high expectations of academic achievement.
Smith ensures a supportive and challenging atmosphere in and outside the classroom, with more than 100 student organizations, ranging from dance to athletics to campus radio. Students can join the crew or tennis team, or go on hikes with the Outdoor Club. Other student associations encourage dialogue and support-networks for Smith’s diverse community, with representatives from all 50 states and 70 different countries. Smith at a glance – Smith College facts
For over more than a century, Smith College has built a reputation for empowering women to succeed, developing in students an open, yet critical approach to the world. As the college website proclaims:
“Smith is a vibrant community filled with energetic, intriguing individuals who come from all sorts of cultural, social, religious and economic backgrounds and bring with :them, like you, a thirst for new ideas. Whether discussing future plans late into the night, sharing success stories from the athletic fields or the labs, studying side by side :for finals, working together on a political campaign or learning a housemate’s culture, Smith women are distinguished by their desire to learn what the world has to offer :them and what they have to offer the world.” Living at Smith
