About

Subversion/Subversión is a transnational feminist art magazine. Launched in 2013, the magazine promotes international feminist exchange. It is a collective publication, with all sources in both English and Spanish – as many current feminist magazines/resources on the internet remain anglophone. Additionally, although the English/Spanish bilingual criteria is mandatory for all articles published on the site, many contributions have been written in/translated into a number of other languages.http://subversionsubversion.com/submitcontribuye/

Mission/Misión & Vision/Visión

The magazine sets out to apply transnational feminist theory outside the purely academic realm and into everyday life – making the accomplishments and understanding gained through feminist studies accessible to a global audience.

“Subversion/Subversión wants to take up the challenge to find ways to connect people and ideas from all over, and to stimulate the conversation. There is no one truth. We are not all the same. We do not all need to agree. But we can exchange and share and talk and get to know each other’s situations better and learn, and change our societies for the better.”http://subversionsubversion.com/submitcontribuye/

The ultimate vision of the magazine is the realization of abstract rights and equalities into concrete opportunities through a transformation of our societies’ constructions of gender, race, and class. For the creators of Subversion/Subversión, discussion and exchange are essential to this transformation, and the medium of this conversation is art. By both creating expressions of ourselves and our realities, and by viewing the art created in the world through a transnational feminist lens, the magazine promotes this necessary global feminist dialogue and critique.

“Putting transnational feminist theory into practice, away from inaccessible academics into our everyday lives. We believe that art can bring people together in their truest expressions of self. We want to contribute to the global exchange of ideas through art and language…We want theory to become practice everywhere, and we’re starting with ourselves.”

Creators

Although submissions are welcomed from across the globe, the magazine’s main team comprises ten individuals. Laura De Vos (an activist, writer and student from Belgium) founded the magazine and, alongside the site’s Art Director, Canadian Sarah Olson, administrates Subversion/Subversión. Other members include Andrea Rodas – from Guatemala , the site’s translator -, Zully Morales – from Guatemala, director of Social Media and Graphics -, Jurek González – from Guatemala, Webmaster -, Juli Estrada and Kndela RG – from Venezuela and Colombia respectively, both Senior Contributors – and Nick Jonges, Lisa Leysen and Agueda Zarate – from the the Netherlands and the United States of America respectively, all three Contributors. A couple citations from their biographies include,

“Feminism is anything but the rejection of femininity. It is about embracing that femininity and demanding that the world embrace it the way they have embraced masculinity for most of our history. It is about ensuring that women always have both a choice and a voice. It is about not being devalued because we happen to be women.” – Cézanne Colvin

“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion” – Albert Camus.

Example Submissions

“There are so many wonderful people doing wonderful things, as well as wonderful people doing not so wonderful things that could use some decent critiquing. So we’re looking for both contributions in the way of art in the widest sense of the word, and contributions in the way of writing about other people’s art.” The magazine promotes exchange and dialogue through art, and discussion of art. Articles are continuously updated, but as of now, some recent topics include the Venezuelan guerilla artist Argelia Bravo and American conceptual and performance artist Patricia Ann Alvarado, installments of a feminist web comic Spiderweb // Telaraña, the recent film/documentary of the current situation in Greece, “Into the Fire”, and a collection of drawings and paintings by artist Zully Morales entitled “No more frustration” // “No mas frustración”
