Through the unanimous adoption of resolution 1889 on October 5, 2009 on the occasion of an open debate marking the 9th anniversary of <a href="http://www.wikigender.org/wiki/un-security-council-resolution-1325/">United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325</a> (2000), the Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to the <a href="http://www.wikigender.org/wiki/women-peace-and-security/">women, peace, and security </a>agenda. Resolution 1889 aims to strengthen the implementation and monitoring of 1325. The resolution reiterates its mandate for increased participation of women during all stages of peace and decision-making processes and reinforces its call for the protection of women and girls during armed conflict. Resolution 1889 key provisions include:
