She was an American abolitionist and advocate of women's rights. </p><p>Sarah and her sister Angelina were active in the abolitionist movement till 1837, when the General Association of Congregational Ministers of Massachusetts issued a pastoral letter in July of that year strongly denouncing women preachers and reformers, and the sisters thereafter found it necessary to crusade equally for women’s rights.
