Presentation of the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) Uganda results
With the support of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in partnership with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) conducted the first country pilot of the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) in Uganda. The SIGI Uganda (USIGI) offers policymakers and the development community with the first comprehensive evidence base of the impact of discriminatory social institutions on gender equality and development. Adapted to the national context, the SIGI captures discrimination against women across five areas: family code, violence against women, son preference, access to resources and assets, and civil liberties. Data on social norms across all regions of Uganda have been collected through a process of national consultations, focus groups and a nationally representative survey.
The OECD Development Centre and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) presented the results of the SIGI Uganda on 27-28 May in Kampala, Uganda. The launch event will include a presentation of the methodological framework, survey design and results, as well as the technical construction of the Index and policy implications.
