Youth pregnancy in Thailand
State of the problem
In Thailand, Youth aged 15-19 years with high childbirth rates increased from 50.1 in year 2008 to 53.8 per 1,000 population of the same age in year 2012. While the rate of teen childbearing age 15-19 years in Japan, Korea, China, Singapore are 2-6 persons per 1000 people and countries in the Asia-Pacific region, with an average of 35 persons per 1000 people in year 2012.http://thaipublica.org/2014/03/motherhood-in-childhood Young Thailand’s teen birth rate is higher than the average in Asia and the Pacific, however, the Ministry of Public Health has targeted that the next 3 years, the birth rate in women aged 15-19 years will not exceed 50 people per 1000 people of the population of the same age from 53.8 per 1000 people in year 2012.
Factors of teenage pregnancy
Parents
The family is the smallest social institution but it is the most important. Today, some teenagers don’t have any adviser and enough good care because some parents are too busy with work and some got divorced. In addition, someone be afraid to discuss with their family. Friends
Teenagers spend all their time with friends, so friends become very important and have strong influence on a teenager’s decision. Some teenagers may have sex due to pressure from their peers. Social network
95% of teenager (12-17 years old) use internet and 81% of this group use Social Media. 44% of teenagers who use Facebook have over 300 Facebook friends. That means it is more difficult for parents to handle attitudes and behaviors which affect the learning and ideas of children and youth, because teenagers have more independence and freedom today. Drinking
Drinking alcohol is one of the significant causes of losing sense. So, they make unethical action whether criminal intended or not. Sometimes drinking alcohol stimulates the increasing rate of sexual desire. From the information of men who drinking alcohol in Thailand 2013 found that teenage boy’s alcoholic drinking causes 20% more of teenage girl’s pregnancy than teenage boy who do not drink. The wrong attitude of towards sex
Some wrong attitude may affect to the pregnancy of teenagers such as
- Ability of Sex is a measurement of the manhood
- Having sex before marriage is common
- Women and men have equal rights in sexuality
- Men not considered responsible

Rape
Bangkok has the highest rate of rape, 87 cases per day (Thai Rath 20 March 2014) According to the seminar on sexual violence organized by Social Development and Human Security Ministry, young teens are the most likely target.
- Teens aged 11-15 years old account for 35.1 % of the sexual assault cases.
- Teens aged 16-20 years old account for 22 %
- People aged 26-30 years old account for 10.1%

The impact of teenage pregnancy
Health
- Sexually-transmitted diseases or depression
- Complications from abortion childbirth
- Preterm birth, low birth weight of child
Education
- More likely to drop out of school
Family
- High divorce rates of teenage parents.

Recommendations
- Teenagers must take care of themselves and learn about contraception
- The parents of both boys and girls should talk about sex with their children
- Teachers at schools should give more time to students
- The government should improve access to health services
