Gender, Institutions and Development Data Base 2012

The OECD Gender, Institutions and Development Data Base 2012 is a tool to determine and analyse obstacles to women’s social and economic development. The data base covers a total of 121 countries and comprises indicators on discriminatory social institutions.

Data Base Composition

The Gender, Institutions and Development Data Base 2012 contains information on “Social Institutions” such as cultural practices and social norms that affect gender equality. By providing information on these hidden instances of gender discrimination, the data base complements existing data compilations such as the United NationsDP Human Development Report, the World Bank‘s GenderStats or the Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum .

Measures of Social Institutions

The GID data base structures social institutions into following categories:

• Discriminatory Family Code – social institutions that limit and restrict women’s decision-making power and status in the household and the family.
• Restricted Physical Integrity – social institutions that limit and restrict women and girls’ control over their bodies.
• Son Bias – social institutions that foster intra-household Son Preference and the devaluation of daughters.
• Restricted Resources and Entitlements – social institutions which restrict women’s access to, control of, and entitlement over economic and natural resources.
• Restricted Civil Liberties – social institutions that restrict women’s access to, participation and voice in the public and social spheres.
