About

Rio+20 The United Nations Conference on Sustainable development will take place in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in JohannesburgUN Rio+20 conference website.

The conference will focus on the links between green economy and poverty eradication, and on the elaboration of an institutional framework to sustainable development while aiming to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assessing the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and addressing new and emerging challenges.

Gender and the Rio+20 Conference

The political document, Agenda 21, which was proclaimed after the UN Rio Conference on Sustainable Development reasserted the role women had to play, and the gender issues relative to sustainable development. Agenda 21. In the path to the Rio+20 Conference, women’s major sustainable development organizations regrouped into a steering committee. These organizations are part of the process of preparatory meetings towards the Rio+20 conference, and aims to put gender issues at the forefront through working papers and submissions.
