Variable Description

The disadvantages facing women and girls are a major source of inequality. All too often, women and girls are discriminated against in health, education and the labour market — with negative repercussions for their freedoms. The UNDP introduces a new measure of these inequalities built on the same framework as the wikigender.org:Variables Human Development Index and the IHDI — to better expose differences in the distribution of achievements between women and men.http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/gii/

Gender Inequality Index Overview

The Gender Inequality Index ranks countries by taking account of five indicators:

  • Maternal mortality ratio.
  • Adolescent fertility rate.
  • The share of parliamentary seats held by each sex.
  • Secondary and higher education attainment levels.
  • Women’s participation in the work force.

The following table shows the GII value for 2012http://hdrstats.undp.org/en/indicators/68606.html.
