Background

Information and knowledge. Connecting, sharing, exchanging, showing, developing new skills and knowledge to promote gender equality in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The “América Latina Genera, knowledge management for gender equality” regional project is an initiative promoted by the United NationsDP (RSCLAC UNDP).

The America Latina Genera portal was born with the desire to generate new and fairer forms of relationships between women and men through knowledge democratization, communication, participation and collective learning. Knowledge management was, therefore, considered an indispensable tool to connect and coordinate gender equality and gender mainstreaming efforts in the region.

Gender information updating, compilation and creation of documents, studies, experience, training and tools for gender mainstreaming in a wide range of development issues, and technical assistance to strengthen national capacities for gender mainstreaming, have positioned the Portal and the Project as a regional bench mark in gender issues. Moreover, Latin America Genera has favoured the creation and strengthening of networks of stakeholders that share common interests through dynamic virtual forums and communities of practice.

America Latina Genera joined the UNDP Regional Centre’s Gender Practice Area in 2009 and became not only one of its projects, but also the tool that makes possible the area’s operation and the dissemination of the achievements.

The Gender Practice Area is intended to strengthen gender mainstreaming in policies, programmes and strategies throughout the region. Our work strategies are capacity development, knowledge management and South-South cooperation.

The portal visibilises projects developed and supported by the Practice Area, and facilitates the dissemination and exchange of information, knowledge and experience in key areas to advance gender equality in the region, promoting networking and synergies between stakeholders.
