And while we should all be thinking this irrespective of our sex, it is great to hear more men speak up (and so eloquently) in this way, recognising how social norms and power underpin violence and power.

He examines the current violent, patriarchal ways of dealing with conflict and argues for a better way forward that addresses the root causes of violence.

Anthony Keedi is the Engaging Men Program Manager for ABAAD – Resource Center for Gender Equality in Lebanon. He will be joining the webinar tomorrow!

Thanks for starting this discussion and to the other participants for their interesting insights so far. From the work that we are doing through the Social Institutions and Gender index (SIGI), we have found that shifting social norms requires a multi-pronged multi-actor approach – it is both top down and bottom up. So while laws combatting violence have shown to have some impact, to fully operationalise that law , make it into a living document, they need to be accompanied by welfare centres for survivors, gender-responsive legal systems and education/awareness raising campaigns, inter alia.
There are some interesting initiatives collected by the UN’s UNITE to end violence against women campaign, which shows projects undertaken in coalitions between governments, civil society and other actors. http://www.un.org/en/women/endviolence/

Thanks for sharing. It is amazing how Promundo’s work has spread across the globe and been applied in many different contexts. How has Promundo worked to adapt the programme to local contexts and still make an impact?

We would like to keep the conversation going by moving on to the next set of questions on “Working with a coalition of actors”. However, you are welcome to respond to the previous questions if you would like to.

From your experience who are the various actors that can contribute to a shift in social norms and what are possible entry points to have the most impact?

However, there is some useful discussion in a WHO Policy Brief on “Policy
Approaches to Involving Men and Boys in Achieving Gender Equality and Health Equity” (2010). See pp. 13-14, 19-20, and pp. 21-24 (including Section 4 on strengthening policy approaches).

The full report is available here: http://www.xyonline.net/content/who-policy-brief-policy-approaches-involving-men-and-boys-achieving-gender-equality-and-heal

I look forward to seeing others’ contributions.

Sharing evidence and best practices is crucial to this conversation around positive masculinities.

Today we would like to encourage you to continue answering yesterday’s questions, and propose a new reflection topic: how do you think governments and the development community can learn from successful local initiatives to scale and replicate them at the national level?

We are looking forward tor read your contributions.

Thanks for sharing your experience working in the Balkans with Care International. It would be great to hear more about you have worked to bridge the gap between perceptions and reality. This seems to be an important first step when addressing negative masculinities.
